Senior Banquet Disaster

Every year the University has a senior banquet for all of the senior athletes, and they give out senior rings, and it is suppose to be a time to celebrate. Many seniors look forward to this event, for in the past they have received a good meal, and are treated with video from their college athletic career. This year, the banquet was different. I arrived at practice yesterday as always to hear all of our senior athletes complaining about the banquet. They said that it wasn’t even really a banquet, all they had were cookies that tasted as if they came from Safeway. The speech given by our president included him complaining about budget cuts, and how they couldn’t afford to give them a decent banquet this year, because that is something they decided wasn’t important and they could take budget from. My coach said that it was the worst banquet he has ever had to go to, and he just wanted to get up and walk out. I for one was appalled to hear this. We have enough money to add on to our football stadium which costs billions of dollars, but we can’t spend money to treat the seniors to a nice meal? What was even more appalling was that the football and basketball seniors weren’t even at the banquet. They are having their own banquet for their seniors. It amazes me more and more everyday that some sports such as track were extremely hurt by the budget cuts, and some sports such as football weren’t affected at all. Football and basketball argue that they are the ones who bring in money to the school because they have more people attend their games, but that is how it has always been. Football and basketball are just the most popular sports to watch. Even when our football team and basketball team are horrible, and don’t win a single game, they still have more fans attend their games. It is just a sport that has always been popular. Therefore, I don’t think it is fair that they get to spend godly amounts of money still, and we are suppose to be cutting back on our budget. I also don’t believe that it is fair for the football and basketball team to have their own personal banquet, when everyone else had to suffer. I’m a junior, and was looking forward to my senior banquet next year, however now that I’ve heard what happened this year, who knows what to expect next year. I personally believe that the athletic department needs to rethink how they cut budgets, and maybe start making everyone have budget cuts no matter how much money they bring into the school. That is just my personal beliefs, what do you guys think?

UW vs. Air Force Track Meet

Hello all,
I was just wanting to inform all of you that the UW track team is hosting a track meet this Saturday at the outdoor track starting at 11 am. If anyone doesn't know the location of the track, it is off of 30th street, across from the golf course. The meet is a dual meet so for all of you who think track is boring, it won't last as long as regular meets. So come support the track team this Saturday!!! Hope to see everyone there.

Butler's Inspiration

I know my blog is supposed to be about Wyoming sports; however I am amazed at Butler's performance in the tournament. I don't know if you were like I was when the tournament first started, but I had never even heard of Butler. It has been a tradition to create your own bracket, and how you expect each team to do throughout the tournament. I personally didn’t make a bracket, but everyone that I know that had a bracket kept telling me that they either didn’t expect Butler to make it out of the first or second round of the tournament. Butler did make it past the first and second round of the tournament and shocked everyone when they made it to the final four. Then Butler really shocked the country when they beat Michigan State to move on to the final two. Last night Butler played in the championship game against Duke. The game was close all the way through it, and unfortunately everyone who was rutting for the small town team was disappointed when they lost the game by two points.

This game was extremely inspiring to me, because like Butler, the University of Wyoming is a small school. It just goes to show that anything is possible and if I put my mind to it, I could make it to nationals also. There are people on my team who made it to indoor nationals, and plan to repeat their experience for the outdoor season. For me, making it to nationals would be the most amazing accomplishment of my life. I am however still far away from making it to this level, but I will not let that stop me from doing my best, and pushing my body to the limit. Seeing small schools do good is inspiring to me, and I don’t care if people believe that anyone who was rutting for Butler was just jumping on the bandwagon, it was an inspirational event.

Indoor MWC championships 2010, Track and Field

So today went well for Wyoming track and field teams. The boys dominated the field today, and some of the girls in the throwing events did a good job also. In the mens long jump we placed 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 8th. In men's hammer throw we placed 2nd, and 8th, and in mens high jump we placed 3rd and 4th. So we received a lot of points from the field events that went on today. Tomorrow brings finals for all of the sprint races, and many of our team made it to finals in the sprints. Tomorrow is also womens high jump, men and women's triple jump, and men and women's shot put, so hopefully we can have some top finishers in those too. I am very proud of what my team did today and am excited to compete in the high jump tomorrow, and watch my teammates in their jumps, throws, and races.
